Detailed Description

The imaginal discs, salivery glands and central nervous system of homozygotes are smaller than those of their wild type counterparts. The imaginal discs of hemizygous (ssp598/Df(3L)BK9) larvae are also smaller compared to wild type.

Homozygotes reach the third instar stage but fail to pupate and die between 10 and 20 days after egg laying.

Melanotic pseudotumors form in homozygous or hemizygous (ssp598/Df(3L)BK9) larvae. One or more pseudotumors first appear at 6 days after egg laying and their number and size increase during larval development.

Clones generated in the presumptive wing blade underogo only a few divisions - the mutants cells proliferate slowly and either die or are actively eliminated from the epithelium.

The nuclear size of mutant cells in the distal region of the salivary gland is smaller than that of wild type distal cells.

Very few nuclei incorporate BrdU in ssp598 salivary glands.
