Expressing parkJF01200 under the control of Scer\GAL4Cg.PA leads to mitochondrial defects in the third instar larval fat body, including enlarged, fragmented and/or clustered mitochondria (as assessed by MitoGFP).

Folic acid supplementation to flies expressing parkJF01200 under the control of either Scer\GAL4ple.PF (dopaminergic neurons) or Scer\GAL4Ddc.PL (serotonergic neurons) alleviates the reduced average life span and defects in climbing ability. Levels of oxidative stress are reduced.

Levels of Zinc are lower in flies expressing parkJF01200 under the control of either Scer\GAL4ple.PF (dopaminergic neurons) or Scer\GAL4Ddc.PL (serotonergic neurons) are reduced compared to controls. This reduction is partially suppressed by folic acid supplementation. The reduced number of metabolically active cells, reduced ATP levels and defects in mitochondrial biogenesis are also improved by folic acid.
