Homozygous adults perform very poorly in a climbing assay.

Mutant flies show no sound-evoked compound action potentials in the projections of Johnston's organ neurons in the antennal nerve. Analysis of the mechanical response of the antennal sound receiver to tones of different intensities indicates that chordotonal organ cilium motility is lost.

The chordotonal cilium of the Johnston's organ lacks the dynein outer and inner arms in the proximal region.

Cilia of embryonic chordotonal neurons show abnormal dilation.

fd3F1 mutant larvae and adult flies exhibit locomotion defects. Ch neurons are mostly specified normally in fd3F1 mutants, with little gross structural defects observed in these mutants.
