Homozygous tracheal terminal cells show a reduction in branching (primarily affecting class II branches) compared to wild type. The mutant cells appear to have normal gas-filled lumens and branch tip morphology is similar to that of wild type.
bazFA50 homozygotes are zygotic lethal. This is rescued by the presence of Dp(1;Y)W73 (which contains the baz open reading frame).
Germband elongation is strongly reduced in bazFA50 mutants. Mutant cells engage in fewer rearrangements and display a reduction in both neighbor exchange and rosette formation. Cell movements that do occur in bazFA50 mutants show a moderate loss of directionality. Some cells begin to apically constrict in late stage 7, leading to the formation of ectopic grooves in stage 8. These defects are not due to apoptosis.
Myosin apical localization occurs normally in bazFA50 flies. In contrast, myosin planar polarity is strongly disrupted and myosin accumulates in an irregular fashion at edges of all orientations and at the medial apical cortex. The planar localization of adherens junctions proteins is also affected in bazFA50 mutants.
