An Hsp70 promoter drives expression of a constitutively active form of Mmus\Prkcz ("PKMζ"), which lacks the N-terminal regulatory domain (the mutant protein starts at amino acids 165 of the wild-type protein).

Induction of Mmus\PrkczPKM.hs (using mild heat shock at 32[o]C) strongly enhances 24 hour memory after single-cycle training in an olfactory avoidance conditioning assay. The optimum enhancement occurs when heat-shock induction begins 20 minutes after training ends, and no enhancement is seen if the heat shock occurs before this time, or is delayed until 2 hours after training.

Induction of Mmus\PrkczPKM.hs (using heat shock 30 minutes after training) enhances 4 day memory after massed training (anesthesia-resistant memory) but has no effect on 4 day memory after spaced training (long term memory) in an olfactory avoidance conditioning assay.
