btlBN40 mutants do not exhibit tracheal terminal cells.
Homozygotes survive until the third larval instar or beyond. They have a normally patterned tracheal system with a full complement of terminal cells, however the terminal branches of the trachea are reduced in number and have an altered morphology compared to wild type.
In mosaic animals, homozygous mutant cells rarely develop as terminal cells in the dorsal tracheal branch and increase in frequency towards the branch base.
