Sequence encoding a GAL4 driver has been inserted into a founder azot knockout line (azotKO), resulting in expression of GAL4 under the control of azot regulatory sequences. A single loxP site is present downstream of the GAL4 open reading frame.

      The wings of homozygous azotKO.GAL4 mutant flies exhibit wing defects, including melanotic areas, blisters and wing margin ticks. Blocking apoptosis suppresses this phenotype. The flies do not survive exposure to UV treatments.
