Flies expressing trpD621E in the trp9;trpl302 double mutant background show moderate yet significant changes in their photoreceptor ionic selectivity profile (decreased permeability for both Ca[2+] and Mg[2+]) as well as decreased effective pore diameter alleviated channel block by Mg[2+] and ruthenium red of the mutated ion channel and decreased single channel conductance compared to controls. The flies however do not display increased rate of light-induced retinal degeneration.
