Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) proteins are a family of ATPases involved in chromosome organization and are critical to genome stability and maintenance. SMC proteins have a ATPase domain, a coiled-coil domain and a hinge domain through which they heterodimerize. SMC heterodimers form the core of complexes involved in chromosome organization.
