The retromer coat complex is involved in the endosomal sorting of membrane proteins, particularly in the endosome-to-Golgi (retrograde) retrieval pathway. The complex can be divided into two subcomplexes, a cargo-selective trimer and a heterodimeric BAR-domain-containing sorting nexin complex that promotes formation of endosomal membrane tubules into which cargo proteins are sorted. The composition of the sorting nexin heterodimer may influence cargo selection. Snx1/Snx6 are thought of as the classical retromer complex sorting nexins. In D.mel, Snx3 is required for the endocytic recycling of wls (FBrf0216871).
