Description
Description
Dynein heavy chains are minus end-directed microtubule motor proteins. Cytoplasmic dynein complexes are assembled from a cytoplasmic dynein heavy chain homodimer together with homodimeric intermediate chain, light-intermediate chain and light chain dynein subunits. Cytoplasmic dynein complexes participate in many cytoplasmic transport activities such as vesicle transport, organelle transport and mitotic spindle assembly. Some cytoplasmic dyneins specifically participate in intraflagellar transport. (Adapted from PMID:24064538).
Notes on Group

Although termed 'cytoplasmic' this refers to phylogenetic classification and the structural class of the dynein complex they assemble. The CYTOPLASMIC DYNEIN HEAVY CHAINS gene group also includes intraflagella transport dynein heavy chain subfamily (DYNC2H1, cytoplasmic dynein 2) that function in cargo transport within the cilium. This should not be confused with axonemal dyneins, that drive the bending motion of cilia. Cytoplasmic dyneins localized to the cytoplasm comprise the DYNC1H1 (cytoplasmic dynein 1) subfamily (PMID:24064538, FBrf0230622).
