Description
Description
Sphingomyelinases catalyze the hydrolysis of sphingomylein (in mammals) or ceramide phosphoethanolamine (the analog of sphingomylein in Drosophila) into ceramide and choline phosphate. Distinct acid or neutral sphingomyelinases (aSMase and nSMase, respectively) exist whose activity depends on the pH of the microenvironment - e.g. aSMases operate within the lysosomal compartment. Notes on Group

CG32052 is listed as an acidic sphingomyelinase in FBrf0161471 and FBrf0255710 but is excluded from this group because it lacks a 'Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase' (IPR011160) protein signature and its human ortholog (SMPDL3A) has been demonstrated to lack sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase activity (PMID:25288789, PMID:26783088).
