Eyes-Absent (EYA) family phosphatases function as a protein tyrosine phosphatase and as a transcription factor, with EYA itself and RNA polymerase II CTD repeats as targets. They are members of the Haloacid Dehalogenase (HAD) superfamily that require a metal for catalytic activity and use aspartic acid as a nucleophile instead of the classic cysteine residue. Only one member is found in Drosophila - eya is involved in numerous processes including the regulation of the anti-DNA immune response, retinal determination, spermatocyte development and oogenesis.
