The synthesis of the nucleotide-sialic acid CMP-N-acetylneuraminate (CMP-Neu5Ac) starts in the cytosol with the synthesis of Neu5Ac, which is then transported into the Golgi apparatus where it is converted into CMP-Neu5Ac. In D. melanogaster, the production of CMP-Neu5Ac occurs in glia. CMP-Neu5Ac is then exported to neurons where it is used as a precursor for the sialylation of glycoconjugates.
