Description
Description
Galactose is predominantly catabolized via the Leloir pathway into glucose 1-phosphate and UDP-α-D-galactose. Glucose 1-phosphate can be used for glycolysis after its conversion to glucose 6-phosphate by Pgm1 while UDP-α-D-galactose is a precursor for glycosaminoglycan synthesis and lipid and protein glycosylation. Notes

Galml1, Galml2 and Galml3 are paralogs of Galm1 and Galm2 and are specifically expressed in testis. It is not clear if Galml1, Galml2 and Galml3 are enzymatically active as the active site and/or the substrate binding residues are not conserved. As there is no functional information, Galml1, Galml2 and Galml3 are not included in the gene list.
