Description
Description
In the Golgi apparatus, N-glycans are further processed by class I mannosidase which can trim high mannose N-glycans (Man(8-9)GlcNAc(2)) down to Man(5)GlcNAc(2). In D. melanogaster, N-glycan processing often ends at this stage and the glycoproteins are delivered to organelles, the plasma membrane or secreted. Alternatively, Man(5)GlcNAc(2) can be further processed to GlcNAc(1)Man(3)GlcNAc(2) which constitutes a branch point intermediate for the production of complex and hybrid N-glycans. However, the removal of the terminal GlcNAc by N-acetylglucosaminidase fdl prevents any further elongation, resulting in the export of paucimannose N-glycan linked proteins. (Adapted from FBrf0235108 and FBrf0224862.)
Notes

α-Man-IIb may contribute to the production of non-fucosylated paucimannose N-glycans via an alternative route bypassing Mgat1, α-Man-IIa and fdl. However, as the mechanism is unclear, α-Man-IIb is not included in the gene list. α-Man-Ic lacks activity towards Man(9)GlcNAc(2) N-glycan. As its activity towards other N-glycan forms is unclear, α-Man-Ic is not included in the gene list.
