Description
The TIM23 SORT complex mediates the import and lateral insertion of mitochondrial presequence-containing proteins into the inner mitochondrial membrane. Following translocation of proteins across the outer mitochondrial membrane by the TOM complex, presequence-containing proteins are passed to the TIM23 complex. In the TIM23 SORT variant, TIMM21 replaces the presequence translocase-associated motor (of the TIM23 MOTOR complex, that mediates import into the matrix) and facilitates lateral insertion of proteins into the inner membrane. Lateral insertion is independent of ATP-hydrolysis and dependent on membrane potential. (Adapted from PMID:32074073,PMID:38828998 and PMID:19884344.)
