Cardiolipin (CL) is a glycerophospholipid with 4 fatty acyl chains. It is synthesized on the matrix side of the mitochondrial inner membrane from CDP-diacylglycerol and glycerol-3-phosphate. Following its biosynthesis, CL undergoes a remodeling of its acyl-chains via Taz-mediated transacylation. The mature form of CL contains predominantly unsaturated fatty acyl chains. Abhd18 and iPLA2-VIA are involved in cardiolipin (CL) degradation by sequentially removing the fatty acyl chains. Taz may re-acetylate the tri-acylated monolysocardiolipin (MLCL) produced during the degradation process to regenerate CL.
