Description
The degradation of fatty acids (FAs) via beta-oxidation involves successive rounds of four reactions that remove two carbons from the FA acyl chain per cycle as acetyl-CoA. Beta-oxidation of short-, medium-, and long-chain FAs occurs in the mitochondrial matrix and requires prior ligation of the FA to CoA (activation). Depending on the number of carbons (n), FAs are broken down to n/2 acetyl-CoA (even-numbered) or (n-3)/2 acetyl-CoA and one propionyl-CoA (odd-numbered). Three auxiliary enzymes, delta(3)-delta(2)-enoyl-CoA isomerase, delta(3,5)-delta(2,4)-dienoyl-CoA isomerase and 2,4-dienoyl-CoA reductase, converts the double bonds in mono- and polyunsaturated FAs that are not recognized by the core cycle enzymes, to the 2-trans-enoyl-CoA configuration allowing re-entry into the beta-oxidation cycle. Notes

CG4860 is a paralog of Arc42, although it is involved in the metabolism of short chain fatty acids, its role in beta-oxidation is not clear; therefore CG4860 is not included in the gene list. Although scu has 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase activity in vitro, it is not clear if it is involved in beta-oxidation and therefore is not included in the gene list. CG4592 is a paralog of CG4598 and CG4594. As the substrate binding sites and a site important for catalysis are not conserved, CG4592 is not included in the gene list. The gene encoding the 2,4-dienoyl-CoA reductase has not been identified in D. melanogaster, yet.
