The testis specificity index was calculated from modENCODE tissue expression data by Vedelek et al., 2018 to indicate the degree of testis enrichment compared to other tissues. Scores range from -2.52 (underrepresented) to 5.2 (very high testis bias).

For each fully sequenced cDNA the DGRC maintains various forms of the cDNA (e.g tagged or untagged) in several different host vectors for subsequent cloning and expression in Drosophila and Drosophila cell lines.
Mosaic analysis was used to determine that muscle degeneration induced by an aperC mutation is neurogenic in origin, not myogenic.
aperC mutations cause the degeneration of a particular pair of head muscles involved in proboscis extension. Immobilisation of the muscle (mechanical immobilisation by fixing the rostrum of the proboscis onto the cranium, or genetical immobilisation by creating an aperC/aperA double mutant) suppresses muscle degeneration.
The progression of the proboscis extension reflex (PER) is dependent on the rearing temperature in the posteclosion stage. The aperC+ gene is necessary for the posteclosional maintenance of the rostral protractors.
Sugar-induced proboscis extension nearly absent (i.e. no extension at all of rostrum and haustellum), but not until adults are three to six days old; this defect, which is completely recessive, wanes such that at least half of the adults behave normally again by approximately day 10-11; correlated with these behavioral changes is time-dependent degeneration and regeneration of a pair of muscles, the rostral protractors (? = proboscis muscle 1).
