The impact of a high-protein diet upon insulin signaling has been investigated in Drosophila. It has been shown that regulation of insulin secretion via insulin-like peptides differs for high-protein and high-sugar diets: amino acids promote the secretion of insulin-like peptide 2 (Ilp2) by the insulin-producing cells (IPCs); circulating sugars promote the selective release of Ilp3 from the IPCs.
