Subject: 33rd ADRC abstract
Dear Dr. Siegel,
I am member of the FlyBase consortium working with Prof. M. Ashburner
at the Cambridge, England, site. At present I am curating abstracts
from the 33rd Annual Drosophila Research Conference, 1992. On page 25 you
have an abstract: Analysis of a locus affecting both anterior-posterior
and dorsal-ventral axis formation during oogenesis.
At present within the database we have this abstract referenced under
bwk; bullwinkle. This seems unlikely to me as this gene is on a
different chromosome from the P-element insert the abstract discusses.
To help unravel the apparent confusion could you please tell me what
the locus under study is? What are the P-element insertion allele
designations and the subsequent revertant allele designations? Is this
data published elsewhere?
Any information you can give us would greatly help FlyBase to generate
a more comprehensive report of the gene under study. The data you can
give me will be referenced in FlyBase as a personal communication from
yourself, as the information you will be sending is not strictly
present within the text of the abstract.
Many thanks,
Eleanor Whitfield.

The locus is pipsqueak (reference Development Dec 1993). All the alleles and
the phenotypic characterization is in there. There should be another paper,
too, fairly soon, from Ursula Weber and Marek Mlodzik (and me) about
phenotypes in the eye and the molecular characterization of the gene. It
was also known as zeppelin (in the Spradling review). The original allele
is psqP1, and the revertants are known as psqx1-30 and psqx1-36. But all
this information and more is in the Development paper. Feel free to write
if you have further
questions.

Dear Dr. Siegel,
Thank you very much for your prompt response. I shall curate a
personal communication which shall include psq, all alleles and
minimal phenotypic information from Development 119: 1187. This paper
shall be curated in the very near future by my fellow curator.
Many thanks,
Eleanor Whitfield.
