Subject: FlyBase query
Dear Dr. Fristrom,
I am curating your paper for FlyBase:
Prout et al., 1997, Genetics 146(1): 275-285
I have the following queries about some of the genes mentioned in this paper.
1. penguin
FlyBase already has a record for a gene called penguin (symbol pen) which
is located in 19F on the X chromosome.
The penguin gene mentioned in your paper is stated to be on 2L, and
therefore can not be the same gene. I would be grateful if you could
confirm that the location of your penguin gene is on 2L (to confirm that it
is a different gene from the one already in FlyBase). Also I would be
grateful if you could suggest a new name and symbol for this gene.
2. steamer duck
The symbol you have used for steamer duck (stk) is already in use (for
'sticking'). I would be grateful if you could suggest another symbol for
this gene.
3. cassowary
The symbol you have used for cassowary (cas) is already in use (for
'castor'). I would be grateful if you could suggest another symbol for this
gene.
To check whether the new symbols you have decided on are already in use, I
suggest you use 'Symbol Search' on FlyBase, which can be found under
'Searches' on the home page at the following site:

I look forward to hearing from you,
Gillian Millburn

Subject: Re: FlyBase query
Gillian: Thanks for your message. I suggest cass for cassowary and stck for steamer duck. As to penquin, it is my understanding that penquin on the X does not actually exist, so I need to research this further.
Sorry for the trouble. Jim Fristrom

Subject: Re: FlyBase query
Gillian: Still doubt penguin exists. However, let's rename penguin as
pygoscelis (pyg).
Also, rhea is not at 75A-C but is elsewhere on 3L,
Finally, the deficiency that fails to complement moa is Df(2R)59AB,
not Df(2R),AB as it appears in table 1.
Thanks for your help!
Jim
