Subject: unc-13P84200
Hi folks--
We need to sort out some confusion associated with unc-13P84200.
unc-13P84200 was described in Aravamudan et al. (FBrf0111780) as a
P insertion in the unc-13 gene.  They stated that the mutation was
obtained from the Umea Stock Centre as their stock P84200.  The
genotype of stock P84200 was
ry506; P{ry+t7.2=ry11}l(4)161/ciD
when it was first placed in the Umea collection.  The name of this
insertion was later changed to P{ry11}l(4)ry161, though this change
was apparently never made in the Umea stock list.  The FlyBase
insertion entry for P{ry11}l(4)ry161 is currently FBti0000917 and
the allele entry is FBal0032045.  Aravamudan et al. showed that
excision of the insertion reverted the lethality, so there should be
no problem in merging the allele entries for unc-13P84200 and
l(4)ry161 and the gene entries for unc-13 and l(4)ry16.
There are two additional confusing points.  First, Kueppers et al.
(FBrf0159054) used unc-13P84200 and cited Aravamudan et al., but
mistakenly called the allele unc-13P8420 in their Table
1.  Consequently, unc-13P8420 (currently FBal0143143) should be
considered a synonym for unc-13P84200.
Second, there are two loci which have been called l(4)16.  One is
l(4)ry16 (=unc-13).  The other is l(4)102EFb
(FBgn0004537).  l(4)102EFb1 (FBal0011492) was a spontaneous
mutation isolated from a natural population by Hochman.  At some
point, the genotype of Umea stock P84200 was mistakenly changed from
ry506; P{ry+t7.2=ry11}l(4)161/ciD
to
ry506 ; P{ry+t7.2=ry11}l(4)102EFb1/ciD
based on false synonymy.  l(4)102EFb and unc-13 are different loci,
though anyone who used Umea stock P84200 might think otherwise.
