Subject: Helping FlyBase: ADRC.06-60509 Dear Robert, We are currently curating the abstracts for the upcoming 47th (Houston) Annual Drosophila Research Conference, for FlyBase. I am writing in connection with your abstract: Notopleural is an enhancer of Stubble-stubbloid induced leg and wing imaginal disc developmental defects. You mention a gene symbol that is new to FlyBase, 278A. Do you know which of the Genome Project CG annotations your gene corresponds to? All the CGs have corresponding gene records in FlyBase already and we don't like to make duplicate records for what is actually the same gene unless we can't avoid it. The CG symbols become synonyms when an annotation is named with a more descriptive or functional name. Also, if 278A has picked up a more descriptive name/symbol since you submitted the abstract then this would be a good time to tell me so I can get it into the database. With best wishes, Rachel. Subject: Re: Helping FlyBase: ADRC.06-60509 Dear Rachel, 278A is a lab annotation for a mutant stock we isolated from an EMS screen. It appears to be an allele of muscle myosin heavy chain (CG17927) based on deletion mapping, and that it fails to complement the muscle heavy chain mutant Mhck10423 (Bloomington stock 10995). We have not given 278A a more descriptive name, as it has two dominant phenotypes (a bent femur and a crushed/dented thorax) that both show highly variable expressivity and penetrance; we have started referring to it as Mhc278A. If there is a convention you would like us to follow instead, please let me know. The team at Flybase is amazing and I really appreciate your work. Thanks, Robert Ruggiero
