Subject: Helping FlyBase: ADRC-60140 Dear Emmanuel, We are currently curating the abstracts for the upcoming 48th (Philadelphia) Annual Drosophila Research Conference, for FlyBase. I am writing in connection with your abstract: The dUSP36 Ubiquitin Specific Protease is required for larval growth and moulting. You mention a gene symbol that is new to FlyBase, Usp36. Do you know which of the CG annotations your gene corresponds to? All the CGs have corresponding gene records in FlyBase already and we don't like to make duplicate records for what is actually the same gene unless we can't avoid it. The CG symbols become synonyms when an annotation is named with a more descriptive or functional name. Although you use USP36 as the symbol for the gene symbol in your abstract, we will enter the gene record into FlyBase as Usp36, in line with the current nomenclature guidelines http://www.flybase.org/static_pages/docs/nomenclature/nomenclature3.html#1.1. section 1.1.1. Best regards, Rachel. Subject: RE : Helping FlyBase: ADRC-60140 Dear Rachel, Thank you for your mail. The dUSP36 gene corresponds to CG5505 in Flybase. It is also known as "mule" according to a previous Drosophila Research Conference abstract. However, we have decided not to use this name because CG5505 encodes an ubiquitin protease (that removes ubiquitin residues from proteins) and, in mammals, the name "Mule" is already used for an E3 ubiquitin ligase (which does exactely the opposite). So, to avoid any problem, we have named CG5505 dUSP36 because it is homologous to the human USP36 gene.
