Dear Flybase Curators, We would like to propose a change of names for the genes encoding the Drosophila homologs of the vertebrate TNF receptor associated factors (Trafs). The Drosophila Traf family genes were numbered in order of their discovery, which has turned out not to reflect their relationships to their vertebrate and other non-vertebrate counterparts. Instead, Drosophila Traf1 is most similar to vertebrate Traf4, and Drosophila Traf2 is most similar to vertebrate Traf6. Drosophila Traf3 does not show an orthologous relationship to any of the vertebrate proteins. Furthermore, it does not have a RING finger domain or Zn fingers; its MATH-domain shares sequences motifs with the other Trafs, but diverges significantly. We therefore propose to call it 'Traf-like' or 'Traf-related'.
