I am fine with nixing the micr entry altogether. The phenotype was found in a particular RanBPM allele, and it may result from a synergistic interaction between RanBPM and some unknown mutation.

Hi Chris, Paul,
This is all fine - we can assign the name/symbol 'midlife crisis' ('mdlc') to CG4973 when your new paper is fully published.
In removing the 'midlife-crisis' fullname from Paul's 'micr' gene, we have a couple of options:
1. Retain the 'micr' gene record and simply remove the fullname (or change it to something else)
2. Nix the 'micr' gene record entirely.
We're favouring the latter option:
very little would be lost by nixing the gene from FlyBase, and if Paul's not working on it anymore, it's unlikely to be tied up with an annotated gene.
So, any objections to removing the 'micr' gene record?
Steven.

Dear Flybase,
We are publishing on CG4973 (Carmey et al., 2013, Development, in press). We have renamed the gene "midlife crisis (mdlc)". There is a current gene in Flybase named midlife-crisis (micr) which was named for a phenotype that mapped to a second site location by Paul Lasko. Paul has given us permission to use the name midlife crisis for CG4973 and we both would like to request that Flybase removes the name midlife-crisis as it is currently used (see below for his email to me).
   Thanks very much,
   Chris Doe

   Hi Chris,
We used that name for a mid-oogenesis phenotype that turned out to be due to an uncharacterized second-site mutation. We are not pursuing this any more, and I certainly have no objection to you using the name (which is a good one!) for something else.
   Best regards, Paul

   Hi Paul
I see that you have a mutant phenotype with the name midlife crisis in Flybase, which appears to be a second site mutation on a RanBPM mutant chromosome. We have been using that name in the lab for one of our new mutants, and I was wondering if you are still working on your mutant or not. If so, we'll find another name. If not, would it be possible for us to use it?
   Thanks,
   Chris
