Dbuz\Osvaldo sequence demonstrates it contains all the conserved protein sequences and motifs typical of retrovirus-related sequences. Dbuz\Osvaldo is a new long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposon, related to the gypsy family. Transposition rates in hybrids between D.buzzatii and its sibling species D.koepferae demonstrate that Dbuz\Osvaldo transposes in bursts at high rate in the D.buzzatii inbred lines and in hybrids.
The transposition rate of Dbuz\Osvaldo in D.buzzatii is 10-3 transpositions per element per generation. This rate is increased to 10-2 in D.buzzatii-D.koepferae hybrids.
