Arch corresponds to the naturally occurring outward proton pump encoded by the Halorubrum sodomense Archaerhodopsin-3 (aop3) gene (UniProtKB:P96787). It can be used as an optogenetic tool to produce membrane hyperpolarization and inhibit neuron activity, being sensitive to yellow-green light (PMID:20054397).
