hmw expression is detected (via GFP fusion) only in ciliated cells, chordotonal neurons and male germ cells. GFP is detected in sensory neurons at all stages of development. In embryos it's restricted to chordotonal organs and in pupae is detected in the chordotonal neurons of the Johnston's organ as well as the cell body and cilia. GFP is also detected in adult testis, where it is found at stages ranging from spermatocytes to elongating spermatids. During spermiogenesis, the protein was maintained in the cell body of elongating spermatids but was absent from spermatids at the onset of individualization.
