    y is placed in the vicinity of the centric heterochromatin in this rearrangement, so that the reduced complementation of y1#8 by T(1;2;3)YTD5 (compared to the complementation of y1#8 seen with the progenitor y2 chromosome) may be due at least in part to position effect variegation. Consistent with this interpretation, y1#8/T(1;2;3)YTD5 females have a variegated pattern of bristle pigmentation.
