    In combination with other aberrations

    Flies double mutant for Df(2R)D72/Df(2R)D72; Df(3L)fz2/+ are viable but male sterile.

    NOT in combination with other aberrations

    Df(2R)D72 has no significant effect on embryonic lethality and embryos do not appear to have any defects in their longitudinal connectives or glia, compared to wild type controls; there is no effect on the orientation of ommatidia or wing hairs, compared to controls. Df(2R)D72 homozygous males are sterile.

    Df(2R)D72 mutants do not display defects in planar cell polarity in their wings and eyes. There do not appear to be any patterning defects in the embryonic cuticle.

    Df(2R)D72 mutant males are sterile due to defective morphogenesis of the ejaculatory duct, with teh posterior ejaculatory duct being much shorter and thicker than in wild-type. In addition, the muscle sheath is strongly disorganised in Df(2R)D72 mutant males. The morphology of all the other organs of the reproductive tract is normal. Consistent with this, sperm, which is normal only stored in the seminal vesicle accumlates in te ejaculatory duct of Df(2R)D72 homozygous mutant males.
