FB insertion.
Insert stated as cause: FB{} FB insertion into wi allele.
Foldback transposable element reversion.
Insert stated as cause: FB{} Insertion of a 10kb FB-element into the wi duplication.
Insertion of 10kb DNA into the site of the wi duplication. The insertion is a few hundred bp right of the centre of the duplication.
wc is derived from wi which is a tandem duplication of 2.9 kb of the white locus; it contains an FB element inserted in the proximal copy of the duplication, near the junction of the duplicated segments (Collins and Rubin, 1982). 9 kb FB insertion map site (kb): +0.19; Origin = insertion of wa copia; '-' values to left (telomere) end; '+' values to right (centromere) end.

Revertant.
Mutates to w1, w5, w8, w9, w-, wdc, wdi, wi, w+.
Maps at the same site as wa. Unstable; derivatives may be stable (w+ for example) or mutable (such as wdc and wdi) and include both point mutations and deficiencies. The mutations take place in both males and females, may occur in clusters, and do not appear to involve recombination.
Transpositions of a segment of the w gene that includes wc to different locations on the third chromosome have been recovered and are mutable.
The wc allele reverts at high frequencies to wild-type and wi phenotypes, and also to bleached white-eyed phenotypes. These white-eyed phenotypes can be stable or unstable.
Unstable.
