eya1/eya3 and eya1/eya4 adults do not exhibit any differences in the number of ommatidia in the eye while adults containing either genotype exhibit significantly higher number of ommatidia in the eye than eya1/eyaE1 eya1/eyaE4 and eya1/eyacli-IID adults.
eya2/eya3 adults exhibit significantly higher number of ommatidia in the eye than eya2/eyaE1, eya2/eyaE4, eya2/eya54C2 and eya2/eyaD3 but not eya2/eyacli-IID adults.
eyacs/eya3 adults exhibit greater number of ommatidia than eyacs/eyacs, eyacs/eyacli-IID, eyacs/eyaE4 and eyacs/T(2;3;4)ETD4.3 adults.
Less eya3 homozygotes eclose than wild-type, and those that do have severely reduced eyes, and are both male and female sterile. The testes of eya3/Df(2L)eya10 flies are shorter and thinner than wild-type, and are generally devoid of cells in the postmeiotic stages of spermatogenesis. Instead, the lumen's of these testes accumulate rounded up spermatocyte cysts with varying degrees of expressivity. Large clusters of these spermatocytes are apoptotic (assessed by acridine orange staining). Degenerating spermatocytes do not lose their encapsulation by somatic cells.
Homozygotes have reduced eyes and ocelli. Cold-sensitive allele.
Homozygotes may be eyeless, or may have eyes that are up to less than 3/4 normal size. Ocelli are also lost. eya3/eya1 flies have eyes that are between 3/4 and less than normal size.
Female fertile in combination with eya1, eya2, eya4 or eyacli-IID. Female sterile in combination with eyaD1.
Produces eyeless flies in combination with eyaE1, eyaE2, eyaE5, eyaE8, eyaE10 or eyacli-IID. Produces flies which are either eyeless or have reduced eyes in combination with eya4, eyaE4, eyaZ283, eyaD1, eyaD2, eyaD3, eyaD4, eyaD5, eyaD6 or eyaD7. Produces flies with reduced eyes in combination with eyaE6, eyaE9 or eyaE11.
Compound eyes are reduced in size, having approximately 25% of the wild-type number of ommatidia.
