Embryos

derived from mothers homozygous mutant for wekRAR14 in the germline develop dorsalized cuticular structures with a range of phenotypes. 12% of these embryos show an extreme dorsalized phenotype as they secrete a hollow tube of dorsal epidermis. 81% lack ventral and lateral structures but retain the dorsolaterally derived filzkorper and 7% show cuticles which contain both filzkorper and a few ventral denticle belts.

Based on the extent of the dorsalized phenotype in embryos from germ-line clones, the following wek alleles can be ranked from strongest to weakest as follows: wekEX14 > wekRAR14 > weklor.
