R3 and R4 are transformed to R7 cells. In completely transformed ommatidia the relative positions of the targets chosen by R1, R2, R5 and R6 are frequently highly aberrant. Ommatidia are normally rotated.
The presumptive R3/R4 photoreceptor cells differentiate as R7 cells in flies carrying lzSprite.
Conversion of outer photoreceptor neurons R3 and R4 to ventral R7-like photoreceptor, a dosage sensitive phenotype (R4 is more sensitive to conversion than R3). The fate of these R7-like cells is partially dependent on sev function, in a sev14 background many R7-like cells fail to develop as photoreceptor neurons. sev14, lzSprite double mutants display wild-type phototactic behaviour (migrate towards the UV light source) demonstrating the converted R7-like cells function as R7 photoreceptors. In a Ras85De1B background most ommatidia have lost at least one photoreceptor cell. lzr1/lz+; P{sevRas1.V12} flies display an external roughening of the eye and the conversion of three to four cone cells in each ommatidia to R7 cells, this phenotype is indistinguishable from P{sevRas1.V12} alone.
