P{lacW} insertion in the 5'UTR, duplicating a target site between positions -49 and -41 (numbered from the first nucleotide of the predicted protein).
Homozygous larvae appear to be arrested at the first instar stage. They fail to increase in size or and die 2-3 days after hatching without any morphological defects. Homozygous clones in the eye are not recovered, although twin post dbe+ clones are found, suggesting that dbe is required for cell viability during eye development.
