Detailed Description

Homozygotes show little or no embryonic lethality. The majority of the lethality occurs during early pupal and pharate adult stages. Some homozygous adults are able to eclose, but they die 2 to 3 days later. Homozygous pharate adults have malformed legs, which display a range of phenotypes, including being both short and bent or curved around the edge of the wing. The basitarsus may be short and thick and the femur may contain constrictions. 46% of mutant mid-prepupae have at least one malformed leg, 78% of mutant pupae and adults have at least one malformed leg. blv5/blk08305 animals have severely malformed legs.

This allele was listed in the BDGP database as a lethal or sterile line during the period 1994-1999, but was discarded from the gene disruption project prior to the summary publication (FBrf0111489). Reasons for excluding lines from the collection described in FBrf0111489 include presence of more than one P insertion on the mutant chromosome, separation of lethality (or sterility) from the location of the insertion, and loss of lethality (or sterility) from the stock. Further information is available from http://www.fruitfly.org/bfd/ and from Dr. Spradling (spradling@mail1.ciwemb.edu).

Excision of the P{lacW} element can result in reversion of the phenotype.

Complements: rig05056. Complements: rigk07839. Complements: rigk07917. "l(2)05056" was originally reported as an allele of bl, but "l(2)05056" complements blk08305. In addition, "l(2)k07917" and "l(2)k07839" fail to complement "l(2)05056" and complement blk08305. "l(2)05056", "l(2)k07917" and "l(2)k07839" therefore constitute a lethal complementation group that is distinct from bl and this complementation group is referred to as "rig".
