FlyBase curator comment: this entry is used to capture phenotypic information when the particular allele (or allele combination) used by the author could not be determined but the context of the experiment suggests that the phenotype being described is some kind of loss of function.
Many germ cells are able to coalesce along with gonadal mesoderm to form a gonad; however, some germ cells are excluded from this gonad, presumably due to the reduction in number of somatic gonadal precursors (SGPs). These 'lost' germ cells remain in an area ventral and posterior to the gonad until after coalescence. Transheterozygotes with mutants of Ubx, abd-A or Abd-B are only semi-viable and often show thoracic abnormalities.
