Embryos lack normal head involution, fail to complete dorsal closure and have abnormally positioned peripheral nervous system cells and faulty retraction of the central nervous system. The Malpighian tubules are shortened and thickened. The salivary glands have a rounder, more bulbous shape than those of wild-type embryos. The hindgut is wider than normal and the midgut lacks the constrictions seen in wild-type embryos.
