aub^sting-1/aub^sting-3a flies are male sterile and produce needles in the spermatogenic stages. Df(2L)aub^sting-3a homozygotes (mutant for aub^sting-3a and RpL9¹) carrying RpL9^+t3.9 (to rescue the RpL9¹ phenotype) are viable and female sterile. Df(2L)aub^sting-3a homozygous females carrying RpL9^+t3.9 mated to wild-type males lay eggs which start to develop, but arrest at various stages, starting at stage 5. Very few embryos survive gastrulation, and they die before germ band retraction.
