Mutant pupariating larvae collapse into a homogeneous oily mass devoid of pigment or coalescing adult structures within the pupal case. Almost all the resulting dead pupae contain a trapped air bubble at their posterior cavity, diagnostic of the P4(i) prepupal stage.
