The addition of two copies of either or both sct3'F.5.8 and sct5'eye does not restore any boss-expressing R8 photoreceptors or ommatidia.
The addition of atot3'F.5.8 and sct5'eye to ato1 flies does restore significant numbers of ommatidia but does not restore R8 receptors, even though either transgene alone gives no rescue/suppression of this ato1 phenotype. This leads to an unusual arrangement of photoreceptors in the ommatidia. Many of these ommatidia contain fewer than eight photoreceptors, and most of the remaining photoreceptors resemble outer photoreceptors by their positions and the large size of their rhabdomeres.
