Wild-type flies show age-induced memory impairment which can be ameliorated by spermidine-feeding. In contrast to wild-type, homozygous female Atg8aEP362 flies show reduced memory performance at both young (3 days of age) and old age (20 days), even with spermidine administration.
Mutant males have a shortened adult life span compared to controls, with a mean life span of 41.9 days at 25o.
