Severe rough eye phenotype. Most ommatidia have no cone cells and a small number of ommatidia have a single cone cell surrounded by two primary pigment cells. At the "four-cone cell" stage, no cone cells are seen in mutant pupae. The differentiation of photoreceptor cell clusters is normal in mutant eye discs. 20-40% of mutant fertilised eggs fail to hatch.
