The predominant phenotype of arrested amonQ178st animals is a failure to evert the head coupled with a failure to extend the legs and wings (33%). Interestingly, the failures in head eversion and leg and wing extension do not preclude further development of these structures as evidenced by tanning and bristle formation, nor did they prevent the differentiation and pigmentation of the eye.

amonQ178st/Df(3R)Tl-X animals that arrest during larval development usually have duplicated pairs of larval mouth hooks, which are identifiable by morphology as first and second instar larval mouth hooks.

Expression of amonhs.PS using a single heat shock during the first larval instar is sufficient to rescue amonQ178st/Df(3R)Tl-X larvae to the second larval instar stage, but not to the third larval instar stage.

Continuous daily expression of amonhs.PS starting at 36 hours after egg laying (AEL) rescues amonQ178st/Df(3R)Tl-X mutant hemizygotes, to adulthood. In contrast, removal of heat-shock treatment at the late third instar stage (108 hours AEL) results in a failure to eclose.
