Detailed Description

Heterozygous flies show age-related myopathy in their walking behaviour. 4% of Mhc2B/Mhc13 adults have an upheld wing phenotype, 38% have their wings held down and 58% hold their wings in the normal position. 0% of the indirect flight muscle fibres of mutant adults are hypercontracted, 35% show a partial hypercontraction phenotype and 65% are normal.

The severe dorsal longitudinal muscle (DLM) structural defects observed in adult flies expressing mir-9aScer\UAS.T:Ppyr\LUC under the control of Scer\GAL4Hk-UH3 are suppressed by combination with Mhc2B.

In the thorax of wupAhdp-3/Y; Mhc7/Mhc2B flies there is an absence of myofibrils and no clear areas of interdigitated thick-thin filaments. There are visible "tiger-tail" structures formed by condensed serially repeated Z-discs connected by short stretches of thin filaments.

wupAhdp-2/Y ; Mhc2B/+ flies show a complete recovery of wild-type myofibrillar structure in the indirect flight muscles, although the sarcomere length remains slightly, but significantly shorter than that of wild type. The defects seen in fln0 flies are partially suppressed by Mhc2B/+; 22% of the double mutant adults have an upheld wing phenotype and 78% hold their wings in the normal position. The indirect flight muscle fibres are normal in these flies. The indirect flight muscles of wupAhdp-3/Y ; Mhc12/Mhc2B flies show a partial hypercontraction phenotype.

Selected as: a dominant suppressor of the wupAhdp-2 wings-up phenotype. Mutations "Su(2)A", "Su(2)B" and "Su(2)C" contain the same lesion and are assumed to have arisen from a single mutational event.
