Mutant flies show a significant defect in 3 hour memory (assayed 3 hours after a single training session in the odor-shock paradigm) compared to controls.

Mutant males show distinct memory deficiency in two courtship conditioning assays. These defects are apparent 0.5 hours after training. The mutant males show an increased level of locomotor activity unrelated to courtship and spend more time in such an element of courtship as pursuit. Mutant flies show subnormal levels of memory performance in an odor-shock classical conditioning assay.

While the learning index in wild-type flies persists for at least eight hours at the level reached immediately after completion of training, the learning index in nemyP153 mutants is significantly lower than it is in the wild-type by one hour after training. Complete loss of memory in the males of nemyP153 occurs by eight hours after training.

Precise excision of the insertion reverts the memory defects of mutant flies.
