Viable as a homozygote or transheterozygous to another ed allele up to 25oC, but embryonic lethal with ed2B8 at 29oC. ed2B8/edts embryos grown at the restrictive temperature of 29oC show hyperplasia of the central nervous system, resulting in local bulging of the ventral nerve cord. ed2B8/edts and edm1/edts animals shifted to the non-permissive temperature (29oC) for 3 days at the end of larval stage 2 and then shifted back to 18oC can survive to adulthood. These flies have extra macrochaetae, which are generally found next to macrochaetae that are normally present in wild-type flies. The density of microchaetae is also increased and the flies have a rough eye phenotype. ed2B8/edts adult escapers (shifted to the non-permissive temperature for 3 days at the end of larval stage 2 and then raised at 18oC) show irregular thickening of wing vein 2 and/or slight notching of the distal wing margin. edm1/edts flies grown at 25oC have irregular thickenings of wing vein L2. Heterozygotes raised at 29oC have wild-type wing morphology.

The loss of neurons seen in embryos expressing Nint.G.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4Kr.PM is suppressed by ed2B8/edts at 29oC. The thickening of wing vein L2 seen in edm1/edts flies grown at 25oC is enhanced by Dlvi1/+, and in addition, extra wing vein material is seen in the posterior cell of the wing. edts/+ enhances the Df(3R)Espl1/+ phenotype; the extra wing vein material is expanded compared to Df(3R)Espl1/+ flies and the phenotype shows full penetrance.
